An exceptional imitative camp gate
Lot 2922
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 19 mm, 3.61 g, 5 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Treveri. Irregular mint, after 324. CONSTAN-TINVS AG (sic) Laureate bust of Constantine I to right, wearing trabea and holding eagle-tipped scepter in his right hand. Rev. VINTVS CHESS / PTR Camp gate with no doors and two turrets; above, star. Cf. RIC VII, p. 205, note. A beautiful coin with an exceptional camp gate. Very minor traces of corrosion, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

This coin is a mule, featuring an obverse of Constantine I and a reverse intended for the Caesars. Its style clearly denotes it as a contemporary 'barbarous' imitation. The camp gate is strikingly depicted with six layers of hatching instead of stone blocks.
